Take a Chance on Quaaludes

Girl group keeps punk alive

"F**k a 'Freebird!" sneered the brash SF-based girl group Quaaludes in response to an audience song request at a recent show at the Knockout. People who are sick of wallflower waif artists have a provocative young band to consider in their backyard.

Quaaludes, a quartet, has an EP called "She's Weird Like Us" and is building a growing repertoire of other songs built at local live shows. The Knockout set flipped from angry, almost-stalking anthems ("Hate Mail") to relatively more mellow musings on missteps ("Mistake"), riding the edge between classic punk and later grunge notions.

The band performs live at Thee Parkside on April 28 and Swedish American Hall on May 4.
