VENERABLE GATHERING: There are a number of noted art shows in the Western U.S. but few have the cachet, variety, and depth of the Marin Show: Art of the Americas. The showcase known for spotlighting "the stunning art and culture of indigenous peoples from North, Central, and South America" is marking the start of its fourth decade in 2014, meaning that it has had thirty years to gather together top artists, dealers, scholars, historians, and fans who journey to San Rafael to admire and chat with the creators. And those creators? They're making all sorts of goods, from rugs to bracelets to masks to wraps to baskets, pottery, weavings, photography, and books. The treasures and goods and wearables and everything on display represent a wide variety and breadth, one of the many reasons the show is known far and wide.
BUT THERE ARE OTHER REASONS... including its speakers -- art scholar Richard Polsky has a presentation ahead during the show -- and its support of community organizations (Homeward Bound of Marin County is the opening night's beneficiary). The show, set to run from Friday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 23, costs $15 to attend, though there is a coupon online.
