The long-time photographer for National Geographic has traveled the globe, but says it's what he found off the California coast that left him shocked. He dove more than 100 feet below the surface to capture the mile-long fishing gear blamed for unintentionally killing thousands of sea creatures, including endangered animals. The gear, known as drift gillnets, could be phased out by Jan. 2023 if California's governor signs legislation to ban them. Here are a few photos from Nicklen's dive as well as other photographs from his travels, which are being featured in his new book, "Born to Ice."
