San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died early Tuesday at San Francisco General Hospital, his office announced. He was 65 years old.
"It's a very sad day for San Francisco and all of us who knew Ed," Senator Dianne Feinstein said in a statement.
Mayor Ed Lee was a former civil rights attorney who became the first Asian-American mayor in the history of San Francisco. He is credited for overseeing the city's "most successful economic expansion," having added 140,000 jobs and more homes to the housing market than any other mayor in San Francisco history.
