    Naval Aviation was born here in San Francisco. Lieutenant Eugene Ely of the California National Guard flew off the U.S.S. Pennsylvania as an experiment. They built a deck on this battle ship and he was the first guy to fly off and land on a ship. It was a California National Guardsman assigned here at San Francisco. Moffett Field and Alameda was a major naval aviation. It would be nothing 20, 30 years ago to see a flight of a Navy fighter or fighters or bombers flying into Alameda from a carrier coming into port. It was just part of the routine. It was nothing special. So, today we see that today. It's special but it's a reminder of just how important the Navy's aviation was to this area.
