Newark Police Arrest Man After Stabbing Stepfather Over Stray Cat

A man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing his stepfather in Newark on Sunday afternoon after an argument over a stray cat, according to police.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the block of 36700 Munyan Street around 12:20 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Arriving officers found a 63-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his face and neck, according to police.

The suspect, later identified as 46-year-old James Severa, exited the home as officers arrived and was taken into custody, police said.

Severa confessed to stabbing his stepfather with a large kitchen knife, according to police.

Severa told officers they were in the middle of an argument about a stray cat Severa supposedly adopted and his stepfather threatened to kill the pet, police said.

The victim was transported a hospital for wounds that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Severa was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
