28-Year-Old OC Woman Dies From Flu-Related Illness

The woman acquired the H1N1 strain of influenza, the same strain that caused the 2009 pandemic.

A 28-year-old woman from San Juan Capistrano has died because of a flu-related illness, making this the first influenza-related death this season for a person under 65 in Orange County.

The woman, whose name has not been released, died sometime last week, according to a release by the Orange County Health Care Agency. She had acquired the H1N1 strain of influenza, the same strain that caused the 2009 “swine flu” pandemic.

The news comes as other H1N1-related deaths have been reported in California and across the country. H1N1 can cause severe illness in young and middle-aged adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
