Hazardous Conditions Prompt Closure of SoCal Beach

Sacred Cove, a beach off the coast of Palos Verdes, will be closed until Monday night due to the hazards, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Large surf and hazardous ocean conditions have prompted closures at one Southern California beach, keeping lifeguards busy across other area beaches.

The National Weather Service High has issued an advisory for the Southland, warning residents that high waves and strong rip currents caused by the swell pose dangerous swimming conditions.

The advisory is in effect throughout the Labor Day weekend and into Tuesday, peaking on Sunday and Monday, the NWS said.

Safety recommendations include:

  • Avoid climbing on jetties and rocks near the water's edge

  • If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore
