A student’s airsoft gun prompted a police investigation at Mission Bay High School in San Diego Friday morning, authorities confirmed.
Officers were called to the campus located at 2475 Grand Ave. just after 8 a.m.
According to the San Diego Police Department, while in a classroom, a student texted her parents to let them know that another student had a gun in his pocket. She also told school officials. The incident was then reported to police.
Officers surrounded the classroom and made contact with the suspect student, pulling him out of class for questioning. An officer said that other students in the classroom were calm, and never aware of why the suspect student was being taken by officers.
Upon talking to the teenage boy, police discovered the student was carrying an airsoft pellet gun along with its BBs. He was detained by campus police.
Campus officials said the student was calm and cooperative with officers. However, investigators do not know his reasoning for bringing the airsoft gun to campus.
After the student is interviewed, campus police will decide on consequences. His parents will also be contacted.
Officials said police acted quickly as a precaution. No one was injured.
San Diego Unified Police Department operations Lt. Mike Marquez said you never expect something like this to happen at your own school, but the matter was handled swiftly.
“It certainly hits home. We are prepared for it,” he said.
