Diver Missing Off NorCal Coast Near Salt Point State Park

JENNER, Calif. (AP) - A diver is missing off the Northern California coast.

The Coast Guard says the unidentified man was reported missing to them a little before 5 p.m. on Monday. He was about 200 feet off shore near Salt Point State Park in Sonoma County. The park is in Jenner about 90 miles north of San Francisco.

Sonoma County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Hoener tells the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa that the man's wife reported him missing.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and lifeboat, but the helicopter had to return because of fog.

Rescuers resumed the search effort on Tuesday.

The Press Democrat says the area is popular with abalone divers, but also has its dangers. A 36-year-old San Francisco diver died there in April after getting caught in a rip tide.
