Dozens of Homeless San Diegans Treated to Haircuts, Food at Father Joe's Villages

Dozens of homeless San Diegans were treated to a new look Tuesday: haircuts courtesy of a local barber shop, just in time for the holidays.

Rawknykz Barber Shop teamed up with Father Joe's Villages for the second year in a row to treat attendees to fresh cuts and some pizza.

"I appreciate them coming out here and just giving their time," said Marco, one of the men getting his hair cut. "At the end of the day, I don’t really have a lot of money, so I know I couldn’t go to a shop and pay 20 or 25 bucks for a haircut."

Marco said getting a haircut, especially one with a unique cut, was not something he would have ever considered.

The haircut means a lot to him, especially this time of the year.

"They might not have enough time, but I appreciate these guys taking time out of their schedule because I know they could be making money right now and they just come out and give back to the community," Marco said.

Barber shop owner Nick Romero said the event is an important chance to give back during the holidays.

"This is our support, letting them know, listen we’re here for you guys we’re trying to get you guys to move forward in your lives and we’re going to help you feel confident in doing so," he said.

Romero said he's looking to coming back again next year, perhaps more frequently.

"They love it, they love it," he said. "They say, when are you going to come back?"

Prior to the event, employees at the barber shop told customers about the event and asked them to bring in donations for the homeless.

"If it wasn't for things like this, trying to get these people off the streets and progress in their lives, it's the least we can do," he said.
