Driver Strikes, Kills 86-Year-Old Woman Using Walker

Mary Francel died at the scene shortly after she was fatally struck

A driver struck and killed an 86-year-old woman while she used her walker on the sidewalk in Clairemont Thursday.

Mary Francel was struck by a delivery truck while she was walking on the sidewalk along Balboa Avenue, the San Diego Medical Examiner's Office said.

Investigators are working to piece together exactly what happened leading up to the crash.

The collision took place on Balboa and Mount Abernathy avenues soon after 10 a.m., next to a shopping center just west of Interstate 805, according to San Diego police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Police said a package delivery truck driver had just dropped off a delivery. As he pulled out of the driveway and made a right turn onto Balboa Ave., his vehicle struck Francel.

First responders tried CPR but Francel died at the scene. Police said the driver could not see the victim before she was struck.

One security guard who works nearby, Steven Ruzbarsay, saw the aftermath of the fatal collision.

“I looked down the street and there she was. She was just laying in the middle of the road. That’s pretty much all I saw. I didn’t see who hit her though,” said Ruzbarsay.

SDPD officers closed eastbound Balboa Avenue between Genesee Avenue and Mt. Abernathy. According to police, a Sig Alert was issued for the area asking drivers to use alternative routes.

An investigation is underway from the SDPD Traffic Division.
