Human Remains Found at Trash Sorting Facility in City of Industry

This is the fourth time that human remains have been found at the facility since 2002.

Homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of human remains found on a conveyer belt at a recycling facility in City of Industry Tuesday.

An employee at Athens Services found the remains around 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to police. The body parts belong to a woman, but the Los Angeles County Coroner has not yet determined a cause of death.

The facility is located on the 14000 block of Valley Boulevard in the City of Industry.

This is the fourth time that remains have been found at the facility since 2002.

Male human remains were found in December 2013 at the same facility. A body of a one-day-old newborn was found in 2012 and in 2002 a body was also recovered from the business.

The newborn and the man found in 2013 were determined not to be killed in homicides, Lt. Steve Jauch of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The 2002 case remains unsolved.

"Athens Services is saddened today by the discovery of a body in our Material Recovery Facility," Chief Executive Gary Clifford said in a statement. "Athens immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Department and they have taken over the investigation and communications responsibility for this tragic incident. We are also making grief counseling available to any of our team members, who may be traumatized by this discovery."
