PD: Man Fatally Shot While Sitting on Park Bench

Detectives are searching for a suspect responsible for fatally shooting a man who was sitting on a bench at a park in San Diego’s Skyline community, according to officials.

The San Diego Police Department says the shooting happened around 7 p.m. at Marie Wideman Park in the 6700-block of Imperial Avenue.

Officials were called to the scene to investigate a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a 28-year-old man on the sidewalk inside the park, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper extremities.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the victim was sitting on a park bench when a suspect – described as an armed, Hispanic male in his 30s wearing all black clothing – walked up to the victim and opened fire.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot. As of 6:45 a.m. Monday, the shooting suspect had not been arrested and investigators were still collecting evidence at the park.

Police say the motive behind the fatal shooting is unknown.

Meanwhile, the victim’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.

The shooting at the park is under investigation. Anyone with information should contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
