PD: Boy Scout Brought Gun to Camp

Police believe a Boy Scout who died in a camp shooting brought the gun from home.

A 12-year-old boy was found shot to death Monday at a summer camp on Fiesta Island. The Boy Scout was visiting with a troop from Las Vegas.

Police believe the handgun found at the scene will be traced to Las Vegas and that the boy brought the gun to camp himself, according to a statement from SDPD. Police also said the gun was unregistered.

Police initially reported that the 12-year-old shot himself in the head. However, investigators later said the boy was hit in the torso and it was unclear how many times he had been shot.

An autopsy was completed Tuesday, but the San Diego County Medical Examiner has not released the cause of death.

While investigators would not comment on whether anyone else was in the tent at time of the shooting, they said there were no eyewitnesses.

The boy’s father, a scout leader, was present at the camp.

The Boy Scouts of America runs a summer camp on the patch of land in the middle of Mission Bay from June to August, offering merit badge opportunities in everything from kayaking to SCUBA to fire safety.

The location focuses on aquatics activities and does not include a shooting range.
