Man on Fire Runs Across Pacific Grove Golf Course, Dies

Police are investigating the death of a man who was seen on fire running across a golf course in Pacific Grove early Sunday morning.

The Monterey Herald reports that employees of the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course restaurant and pro shop saw the man running -- in flames -- near the course's 17th hole on Ocean View Boulevard.

When police arrived, the man and a fence outside the bathroom were engulfed in flames. An officer extinguished the flames immediately, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the paper.

Employees commented that the flame was so large, they initially thought the car was on fire.

Police Chief Vicki Myers told the Herald the man was in his 50s.

Documents found in the man's Mercedes led investigators to believe they have positively identified him. The release of the man's name was delayed so the coroner could notify the family, Myers said.

Two out of three tees at the 17th hole were closed for investigation, but the rest of the course remained open for play.
