Millions of Winning Powerball Tickets With Smaller Prizes Sold in California

OK, so the Powerball numbers have been announced and you matched some numbers, but not enough to make you an overnight billionaire.

Grab a tissue. We'll wait.

Now, don't toss that ticket. There's good news: If the numbers on your Powerball ticket match some of the winning numbers - 4, 8, 19, 27, 34, and Powerball number 10 - you still have some moola coming your way. More than 3.6 million winning tickets with smaller prizes were sold in California alone.

"The amount of play we had, everyone was hoping to win the big ($1.6 billion) prize," California Lottery spokesman Greg Parashak said. "At the end of the day, something's better than nothing."

For example, 12 tickets sold in the Golden State matched five numbers, minus the Powerball number. Each of those lucky folks will be able to claim a $638,146 prize.

If you matched only the Powerball number, you'll receive $4. Three numbers plus the Powerball number? $129. Four minus the Powerball number will net $291.

See the chart below for prize amounts for the drawing on Wednesday, Jan. 13:

If you won a prize, here's how to claim it:

If it's $599 or less, go to any California Lottery retailer, such as the place where you purchased the ticket, and get a cash payout.

If it's $600 or more, you'll have to fill out a claim form. There are two California Lottery district offices in LA County, one in Orange County and another in San Bernardino County. Click here for office locations.

The jackpot was a record $1.6 billion, and only three tickets matched all six numbers. Those three tickets were sold in Tennessee, Florida and Chino Hills, California.
