Private Track Coach Charged With Sexual Battery Against Athlete

A 67-year-old man who worked as a private track coach in the West Los Angeles area pleaded not guilty Thursday to sexually assaulting one of his trainees.

Conrad Avondale Mainwaring, a former Olympian, was arrested Wednesday morning. He appeared in court Thursday and pleaded not guilty to one felony count of sexual battery by fraud. He is due back in court July 10. He remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Prosecutors said Mainwaring allegedly sexually assaulted the then-20- year-old man on June 25, 2016, under the guise of providing physical therapy. Police said Mainwaring worked as a private coach at various West Los Angeles tracks. According to the District Attorney's Office, he coached UCLA track athletes, although he does not work for the university. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted.

Mainwaring competed in the 1976 Olympics as a hurdler for Antigua. He has been the subject of an ongoing investigation by ESPN, which reported that more than 30 men have alleged misconduct by Mainwaring dating back to the 1970s.
