Plastic bags need your help.
The plastic bag industry is mobilizing ahead of next summer, when single-use plastic bags become illegal in California, to get the public's help in re-legalizing single use bags.
The Vacaville Reporter has the story of the American Progressive Bag Alliance's efforts to collect 504,760 signatures ahead of Dec. 29. That's how many voters' signatures are needed to put a ballot initiative on the November 2016 ballot that would overturn Senate Bill 270, which banned bags.
California would become the first state in America to ban single-use bags. Shoppers will still get plastic, but the bags will be made of a "high percentage of post consumer content"
The ban goes into effect July 1, 2015.
The argument on both sides is for jobs: The Bag Alliance says that some 2,000 bag-making jobs in California are at risk if the bags are banned.
