ELK GROVE, Calif. (AP) — A suspected marijuana grower was shot and killed at a federal wildlife refuge near Sacramento.
The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday morning that agents from the California Department of Justice Mountain and Valley Marijuana investigation team and Sacramento County Sheriff's Department deputies were conducting a raid at the Stone Lakes Wildlife Refuge in Elk Grove when the shooting occurred. The refuge is about 10 miles from downtown Sacramento.
No officers were injured. The man's name was not released.
The circumstances of the raid and the shooting were not immediately clear.
A Fish and Wildlife officer fired the fatal shot at the armed suspect, according to a Department of Justice spokeswoman.
Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael McLaughlin said that the suspected grower died at the refuge, the newspaper reported.
