16-Year-Old Girl Alleges LAPD Cop Gave Her Abortion Pill

Officer Robert Cain is jailed on other weapons convictions, and faces up to seven years and eight months in state prison on the pending sex charges

What to Know

  • Former officer Robert Cain's alleged relationship with the plaintiff began in January 2017 and ended five months later
  • The complaint alleges sexual harassment, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress and civil rights violations.
  • Cain is not a defendant in the suit

A 16-year-old girl alleges that a Los Angeles police officer who supervised her in the police cadet program sexually abused her and gave her a pill to induce abortion when he thought she was pregnant.

In a lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the girl was identified only as Jane B.Q. Doe. The complaint alleges sexual harassment, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress and civil rights violations.

The girl's alleged abuser, former Officer Robert Cain, is not a defendant. The 10-year veteran officer resigned last June, after police Chief Charlie Beck personally arrested him.

Cain, 31, is jailed on other weapons convictions, and faces up to seven years and eight months in state prison on the pending sex charges, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Friday's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. A representative for the City Attorney's Office could not be immediately reached.

It states that "when Cain believed Jane B.Q. Doe might be pregnant, Cain gave the minor plaintiff a pill to induce abortion," the suit alleges.

Cain's alleged relationship with the plaintiff began in January 2017 and ended five months later, during which time he took her to places like Magic Mountain, gave her gifts and sent her inappropriate text messages, the suit states.

The city negligently supervised Cain and "ignored and/or covered up" the teen's sexual abuse, the suit states. The city knew or should have known that a personnel complaint was previously filed against Cain at the Van Nuys station, but he was transferred to the 77th Street station in 2015 and remained a cadet adviser, the suit states.

Cain previously pleaded not guilty to two counts each of oral copulation of a person under 16, lewd acts on a child and unlawful sexual intercourse. The girl was 15 at the time.

He is awaiting a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court.

On Jan. 19, Cain pleaded no contest Jan. 19 to two weapons-related charges stemming from a search of his home in San Bernardino County.

He was immediately sentenced to two years in county jail and four years of supervised release following his plea to one felony count each of manufacturing of an assault weapon and possession of multi-burst trigger device or "bump stock."

Eight other weapons-related charges were dismissed as a result of Cain's plea on those charges, according to his attorney, Bill Seki.
