UCSB Water Polo Player Dies During Training at Santa Barbara Pool

Police say a member of the University of California, Santa Barbara, water polo team has died during training exercises at a pool.

Lt. Paul McCaffrey says 19-year-old Nicholas Johnson was pulled from the pool at Santa Barbara High School Monday after another swimmer noticed he was unresponsive under the water.

McCaffrey says Johnson was in the middle of a drill where the swimmer repeatedly goes the length of the 25-yard pool on a single breath.

Witnesses with lifeguard training performed CPR until medical personnel arrived. Johnson was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The coroner's office will determine the cause of death.

Johnson was a graduate of Santa Barbara High, where he occasionally trained.

UCSB water polo coach Wolf Wigo called Johnson a ``brother'' to his teammates.
