Basketball Players Barred for Wearing “I Can't Breathe” T-Shirts Rally in Protest

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A Northern California high school basketball team barred from a tournament because players refused to stop wearing T-shirts reading "I Can't Breathe" during warm-ups plan a rally to protest the decision.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports members of the Mendocino High School girls' basketball team, whose invitation to the tournament was withdrawn because players refused to stop wearing the T-shirts, will meet outside Fort Bragg High School Monday morning. The athletic director at Fort Bragg high made the decision.

The boys were reinstated after all but one player agreed not to wear the shirts inspired by the last words of Eric Garner, the New York man who died after an officer put him in a chokehold.

Too few girl players accepted the condition for the team to field a tournament squad.

The three-day tournament starts Monday.
