Deputy Sheriff, Community Service Officer Killed in Modesto Car Crash

A deputy sheriff and community service officer representing the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department were killed during a car crash in Modesto Saturday morning.

Deputy Sheriff Jason Garner and Community Service Officer Raschel Johnson were driving near Crows Landing Road and 7th Street in Modesto around 8:20 a.m. when the patrol car they were riding in struck a building and caught fire, according to authorities.

Garner, a nine-year veteran, and Johnson, a 15-year veteran, were responding to a burglary call when their car swerved and hit an automobile wreckage business, according to authorities.

The loss stunned those with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

"Our hearts are broken and we pray for Deputy Garner's family, Community Service Officer Johnson's family, and all the members of our department who are dealing with another tragic loss," the department wrote on Facebook.
