New NASA Spaceship Coming to California

Project engineers say it’s the successor to the space shuttle program, with some cost-effective updates.

NASA's newest spacecraft is spending the summer in California. The Dream Chaser, just completed by the Sierra Nevada Corporation in Colorado, is making its way to California for testing.

The new spaceship is the successor to NASA's shuttle program, but this one is smaller, lighter and less expensive to build, NBC affiliate KUSA reported.

The Dream Chaser will eventually be used to resupply the International Space Station, carrying both cargo and people.

"We call this our space utility vehicle," SNC Space Systems vice president Mark Sirangelo said.

The Dream Chaser's first test flight is set for later this year. It is scheduled to go into space for its first mission at the end of 2019.
