Hourslong Standoff That Prompted Evacuations Ends With Arrest

An hourslong standoff came to an end Saturday morning after police arrested a man who was barricaded in his Hollywood apartment.

The SWAT team used a "chemical irritant" or gas to get the man out of his apartment just before 7 a.m., said Cpt. Cory Palka of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police were called to the apartment complex, in the area of Vine Street and Sunset Boulevard, at 10:35 p.m. Friday, to a report of a man who was acting erratically, according to Sgt. Robert Ward of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division.

Information learned at the scene prompted police to take "a tactical stance," Ward said, but did not give details, however, reports from the scene indicated the man may have been armed.

Residents on the man's floor and on the floors above and below the barricade were evacuated.

Police confirmed they found two different weapons on the man, who was arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charges.

Vine Street, from Sunset Boulevard to Selma Avenue, was blocked to the public Saturday morning for the investigation.
