More than a month after the death of George Floyd in police custody, rallies and protests have continued across the country. The crowds are made up of thousands of individuals, each with their own reasons for being there. Here are just a few of them, in their own words.

On Saturday morning, activists in Martinez painted a large Black Lives Matter mural in the street in front of the county courthouse after receiving permission from the city. Within a matter of hours, a man and a woman showed up and started painting over the letters with black paint, shouting at activists and angering witnesses.
Oakland’s school board voted unanimously Wednesday evening to abolish the school district police force by January, adopting the “George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland Schools Police Department.”

Richmond has joined Washington D.C., Oakland and San Francisco with its own Black Lives Matter mural painted on the street in bright yellow. Volunteers began painting around 9 a.m. Saturday in front of the Richmond Civic Center.
