25-Cent Bag Fee Proposed in South Bay

San Jose wants feedback on fee for disposable bags

The City of San Jose wants your feedback about a proposal to charge 25 cents for each disposable bag, paper or plastic, that shoppers take home from stores in Santa Clara County.

The idea was floated by the county's Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission as a possible way to discourage the use of disposable bags and to encourage the use of reusable bags.

The commission asked cities around the county to provide feedback on the idea.

San Jose's Environmental Services Department held its first public meeting Wednesday to get comments and answer questions on the proposal.

The second meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 29, from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm, at San Jose City Hall Council Chambers.

Comments and questions can be sent to Bring-ur-Bag@sanjoseca.gov, or by calling 408-975-2570.
