Nevada Town Conflicted Over San Francisco's Trash

Rebranded Recology wasting its green image

Burning Man attendees are back from Black Rock City, but they aren't the only problem San Francisco prefers to dump in the deserts of Nevada.

Recology, the fancifully rebranded company better known as Norcal Waste Systems, wants to ship San Francisco garbage to a new landfill in Winnemucca.

The plan involves shipping 4,000 tons a day of trash 300 miles by train and dumping it on a mile-square piece of property for the rest of the century at least.

Guess they didn't get the press release from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom about recycling 100 percent of the city's refuse.

But hey, the project will create an estimated 25 jobs.

Those, too, will be in Nevada.

Jackson West is normally a fan of solving local problems by taking them to Nevada, but this is a bit much.
