Bike to Work, Get a Treat

Every Friday in July, volunteers with the San Francisco Bicycle  Coalition have put a bit of extra pep into two-wheeled commuters through its  Gas-Free Fridays campaign, and this Friday is the last chance to fuel up this  summer.

Gas-Free Fridays, in its third year, encourages road-shy San  Franciscans to try bicycling on Fridays.

Half of all trips in San  Francisco are shorter than two miles in length - a distance it says is  relatively easy to travel by bicycle, according to the bicycle coalition.

Friday, cyclists can charge up with free coffee and snacks  at the intersection of Valencia and 17th streets between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  Cyclists who become a member of the coalition this morning (Friday) will also  be entered in a raffle to win a bike trailer.

Teri Gardiner, the coalition's director of communications, said  the weekly events are a great one-day motivator for inexperienced riders to try urban cycling.

The SFMTA recently announced that the volume of bicycling in the  city is generally increasing along Market Street, which sees a stready stream  of cyclists during commuter hours.

The agency made that conclusion using tallies conducted during  May's annual Bike to Work Day, and attributes the upswing to recent  improvements along the bustling corridor.

Another flight of Gas-Free Fridays is scheduled for this October.
