Two eco-friendly boats are heading out of the port of San Francisco today.
One will carry tourists to Alcatraz, the other will cart commuters to and from the East Bay.
Let's start with the "Gemini." It was built from scratch and boasts emissions 85-percent better than EPA standards.
On board there are state-of-the-art night vision cameras and radar to detect and protect whales or other sea creatures that could be around the boat.
The Gemini was built to help respond to any emergencies in the Bay Area that would paralyze the bridge and BART systems.
On a daily basis though, it will be used on runs between San Francisco and Oakland/Alameda.
The $9 million vessel belongs to the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority and was paid for with bridge tolls.
Now on to Alcatraz Cruises, which was also unveiled today. It's a boat that it argues is even more environmentally friendly than the Gemini.
The "Hornblower Hybrid" is powered with the help of wind turbines and solar panels on the top deck.
The $4 million vessel was built with private funds.
