Go Wild When It Comes to Seafood

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is encouraging Bay Area residents to  make every day Earth Day by using its "super green" seafood list to pick  foods that are good for both people and the environment.
The list features seafoods that have low levels of contaminants,  the daily recommended minimum amount of omega-3, and are classified as an  environmentally friendly "best choice" by Seafood Watch.

It includes wild Alaskan salmon, wild albacore tuna from the U.S.  or British Columbia, farmed mussels and oysters, wild pink shrimp from  Oregon, farmed rainbow trout and freshwater Coho Salmon from the U.S.

The aquarium developed the list with researchers at the Harvard  School of Public Health and the Environmental Defense Fund.

  • Albacore Tuna (troll- or pole-caught, from the U.S. or British Columbia)
  • Freshwater Coho Salmon (farmed in tank systems, from the U.S.)
  • Mussels (farmed)
  • Oysters (farmed)
  • Pacific Sardines (wild-caught)
  • Pink Shrimp (wild-caught, from Oregon)
  • Rainbow Trout (farmed)
  • Salmon (wild-caught, from Alaska)
  • Spot Prawns (wild-caught, from British Columbia)

Other Healthy Choices

  • Arctic Char (farmed)
  • Bay Scallops (farmed)
  • Crayfish (farmed, from the U.S.)
  • Dungeness Crab (wild-caught, from California, Oregon or Washington)
  • Longfin Squid (wild-caught, from the U.S. Atlantic)
  • Pacific Cod (longline-caught, from Alaska)
