One year ago, Molly Golbon was diagnosed with lung cancer. The 40-year old married mother of two allowed NBC Bay Area to follow her to her scans, doctor appointments, and personal family moments as a way to change the stigma of the disease. The video is an original NBC Bay Area News documentary of Molly's cancer journey.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 399,431 Americans are living with lung cancer and Molly Golbon is one of them. Just like 20 percent of American women diagnosed with lung cancer, the 40-year-old married mother of two never smoked. "I couldn't get the idea out of my head that I had never smoked and that I had lung cancer," Molly said.

That's one reason Molly allowed NBC Bay Area to follow her for the last eight months. She has taken a brave step, letting cameras roll while she gets her scan results."It's scary getting the scans because it feels like a test," Molly said. "The doctors are just telling you what's already been there."

Molly also shows what it's like to live with lung cancer while working full time and raising two young daughters. "Sometimes I wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning and think, oh my gosh, how much am I handling right now," Molly admitted. "Our family is handling a crazy amount of weight. I mean we have life activities, but yet we have a terrible invader in our home."

While the weight can feel heavy at times,  Molly and her family are optimistic about the future. "She's just living life and she's normal," her 8-year-old daughter Madison said. "Sometimes I forget she even has cancer."
