The makers of AquAdvantageAE salmon worked for 17 years to get their genetically-engineered fish on store shelves. And now Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are saying no thanks.
The fish would be the first "transgenic animal" to be sold in American stores, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
It's not quite out of the gate yet, but environmentalists announced Wednesday that they have secured promises from a string of grocery stores not to carry the fish, according to the newspaper.
The new salmon are bigger than Atlantic salmon and grow twice as fast.
Having grocery stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods promise not to carry the fish is seen as a victory for the forces that lost a GMO-labeling debate this past fall. Prop. 37, which would have required labels on all GMO foods, was defeated by the food industry but still polls well with the public.
