1 Killed, 5 Hospitalized in Two-Car Crash Outside San Jose Airport

A woman was killed Wednesday morning and five people were hospitalized, including a baby, in a two-car crash outside Mineta San Jose International Airport, authorities said.

The driver, who was killed, was traveling at a high rate of speed in a red Pontiac when the crash happened, according to San Jose police officer Albert Morales. Her name has not been released.

Responding officers arrived at Terminal B at about 10:29 a.m., Morales said. Both cars involved in the accident were visibly damaged. The NBC Bay Area chopper showed a mangled black SUV and the damaged Pontiac.

Morales told Telemundo that the 25-year-old woman who died was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Five other people, including an infant, were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Morales said.

While police investigate what happened, nearly everyone is asking the same question: How did a fatal accident happen inside a 25 mph zone? Police say they will review surveillance cameras in the area.

Flight operations were not impacted, but passengers planning to fly out of the airport on Wednesday afternoon were encouraged to allow extra time due to the accident, authorities said.

NBC Bay Area's Gonzalo Rojas contributed to this report.
