A 68-year-old San Jose man died Sunday morning after a car crashed into his car and propelled it down a dirt embankment and into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said officers responded to a report of a collision at 11:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 south of E. Brokaw Road in San Jose.
A 27-year-old San Jose man driving a 1994 Ford Mustang lost control of the vehicle and swerved into a 2000 Toyota Corolla, CHP officials said.
The Corolla spun off the roadway and officers said the car traveled down a dirt embankment before it struck a tree, impacting the driver's side door.
Emergency medical personnel transported the 68-year-old driver of the Corolla to a regional medical center, where he was pronounced dead, CHP officials said.
The Mustang struck the center guardrail before stopping but CHP officials said both the driver and a passenger inside the car were not injured.
The roadway was closed for approximately one hour, according to CHP.

The name of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin, CHP officials said.
