A suspect remains at large after a fatal officer-involved shooting and a massive multi-agency manhunt Saturday in Sunnyvale, according to the the city's Department of Public Safety.
At about 4 p.m., officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at a Motel 6 at 806 W. Ahwanhee Ave., police spokesman Capt. Shawn Ahearn said.
Officers located a black Jaguar XF sedan, which matched the description of the one reported to police, Ahearn said. But two suspects in or near the vehicle ran from officers when they attempted to speak to them.
Officers pursuing the duo noticed a "fully-loaded high-capacity magazine" fall on the street, according to a department statement. It also stated that police chased the suspects behind a commercial complex at 760 San Aleso Ave. — across the street from the motel — where the shooting occurred.
An 18-year veteran Sunnyvale police officer fired his weapon, Ahearn said. One suspect was shot at the scene and the other fled east into the neighborhood near W. Ferndale and Madrone avenues, he added.
The wounded suspect was pronounced deceased a short while later despite officers' life-saving efforts, police said. A firearm was located near the suspect's body while another was found in his backpack, the statement noted.
Nearly 70 officers combed through the area for the second suspect for six hours Saturday evening, Ahearn said. The California Highway Patrol and Santa Clara, San Jose and Palo Alto police departments also contributed to the effort, but came up empty, he said.
Police said the man on the loose is believed to be armed. An investigation is ongoing and police are searching for a thin black man, believed to be about 20 years old, wearing blue jeans and a red or orange shirt, Ahearn said.
No officers were injured in the shooting. Further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately available.
