12-Year-Old Skater Killed by Garbage Truck in Vallejo

A second young boy is in the hospital.

    A 12-year-old boy who was skateboarding died Friday afternoon in an accident with a Vallejo garbage truck, a Vallejo Fire Department battalion chief said.

    Lt. Lee Horton said the boy was sitting on a skateboard with a younger boy, reportedly 8 years old, as they rode down Chapman Court around 12:35 p.m.

    As they approached Linfield Drive, they rode underneath the side of a Recology Vallejo garbage truck and were run over, Horton said.

    The older boy was pronounced dead at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center and the younger boy was flown to Children's Hospital in Oakland.

    Family members were at the scene, Harpold said. The accident happened near the Elsa Widenmann Elementary School at 100 Whitney Ave. that was closed for the Veterans Day holiday, Harpold said.

    Vallejo police, who are investigating the accident, were not available for comment.
