120 People Evacuated in Mission District Due to Suspicious Odor

The San Francisco Fire Department is responding to a possible hazardous materials incident in the city's Mission District this morning.

A report of a suspicious odor at 1500 Valencia St. came in at 9:52 a.m., according to a fire official.

The building's occupants, about 120 people, have evacuated. Firefighters are assessing one patient and the hazardous materials unit is on scene investigating, the fire official said.

The building involved in the call might have been the Salvation Army store located at 1500 Valencia St., the fire official said. She was unclear whether additional buildings might have been involved or evacuated.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management issued an alert on Twitter at 10:35 a.m. warning drivers to avoid the area of 26th and Valencia streets because of fire department activity.
