$12.25 Minimum Wage in Oakland Takes Effect, Highest in Bay Area

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The minimum wage in Oakland is now the highest in the San Francisco Bay Area.

On Monday, the minimimum wage jumped from $9 an hour to $12.25 an hour under an initiative that was approved by voters last November.

Labor leaders say there are roughly 48,000 low-wage workers in Oakland who will benefit from the wage hike.

Besides more money per hour, the measure also gives paid sick leave to all employees.

There are roughly 19,000 small businesses in Oakland. Some business owners say they will have to raise prices to pay employees more money.

Minimum wage in California is $9 an hour. In San Francisco, employers must pay their employees $11.05 per hour. The Emeryville city council is looking at raising its minimum wage to $14.03 an hour.
