13,000 Gallons Lost in Alamo Water Main Break

An estimated 13,000 gallons were lost in a water main break Wednesday morning on a main thoroughfare in unincorporated Alamo, officials said.

The water main break, which was first reported just before 7 a.m., lasted for more than three hours. During the break, water gushed into several yards and homes in Alamo near Danville Boulevard and Hemme Avenue.

"There was a flood and river of water coming down our lane," resident Suzanne Lee said.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District said the combination of age, corrosion and seismic activity shifting the ground likely contributed to the pipe bursting.

"It is a bit of a time capsule," said Rick Pinguelo, EBMUD assistant superintendent. "East Bay MUD inherited a lot of smaller water districts and the equipment they put in."

Water was restored to about 50 homes in the area shortly after 1 p.m.
