17-Year-Old Shot, Killed at Elementary School in Belmont

A 17-year-old Redwood City boy was shot and killed in front of an elementary school in Belmont late Monday night, according to police.

Police said family members of the victim, Mohammad Othman, called police around 10:55 p.m. requesting a welfare check on the victim who they believed was at Central Elementary School in the 500 block of Middle Road.

When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the parking lot at the front of the school, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the victim is believed to have known the suspect, and the shooting wasn't random. Police said the victim had no connection to the school.

Othman was also a football player at Carlmont High School in Belmont. The high school's football coach, Jake Messina, said Othman was a defensive back and a senior set to graduate in June.

Messina said the news of Othman's death is "like a gut punch for me." The coach plans to retire the student's No. 11 from the team as a way to memorialize him.

No arrest has been announced and police have not released any suspect information. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Belmont police at 650-595-7400 or police@belmont.gov.
