19-Year-Old Died, 15-Year-Old Injured, Driver Surrenders After Car Veers off Gulch Near Saratoga

A 19-year-old woman died and a 15-year-old girl were taken to the hospital with major injuries early Wednesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said, after their car veered off state Highway 9 near Saratoga.

CHP Sgt. Aaron Smallenberg said the accident was reported about 1:15 a.m. on Big Basin Way about one mile north of Redwood Gluch Road.

When crews arrived, they found the overturned 2014 Nissan in the gulch and the two victims. Smallenberg said there was a 29-year-old male driver, but he was gone by the time officers arrived.

By 8:30 a.m., the CHP said that Alex Eduardo Antunez Garcia of San Leandro identified himself as the driver, and turned himself in to San Jose police. He was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license.
