2 East Bay Men Die 3 Days Apart While Snorkeling in Maui

Two East Bay men died three days apart while snorkeling at the same Maui beach last week, according to police and fire officials on the island.

On Thursday, a 50-year-old man from Oakland, California, died after he was found unresponsive in knee-deep waters at the same beach. He was identified Monday as Bryan Beyer, according to Maui County Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.

Beyer's neighbors said he was well known in his Glenview neighborhood. He had a big personality and was active in the neighborhood watch. They were in shocked to find out what happened to him.

"In complete shock," said neighbor Alex Colt, who has lived two doors down from Beyer for the past seven years. "I know that he was excited about his trip and really looking forward to it. It's just tragic."

Beyer, a Realtor, had not been snorkeling alone. His business partner said she was with him in the water but not right beside him, and she was confused about how it could have happened.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that on Saturday, a 67-year-old Castro Valley, California, resident was found unresponsive offshore at Kamaole Beach Park III. That victim has yet to be identified.

Taomoto said the man had been snorkeling with friends about 20 yards offshore. They noticed he wasn’t moving and brought him to shore to administer life-saving procedures. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Taomoto said the man had been snorkeling alone when beachgoers found him unresponsive and floating face down in the water.

Taomoto said the death of a Canadian resident was reported Monday.
