2 Killed in San Jose; Pedestrian Deaths Rise to 36

Two people were killed within two hours of each other bringing San Jose's total number of pedestrian fatalities this year to 36.

In the most recent case, a car struck a woman about 12:30 a.m. Friday near McKee Road at Challenger Avenue, police said. Police said she had been walking eastbound in the westbound lane of traffic. Officers found the woman in the street suffering from serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene at short time later.

The driver stopped and is cooperating, police said.

Earlier, about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, police found a man trapped under a car along Monterey and Senter roads after he was struck by a car while crossing the street.

In this case, the driver of what looked like a Toyota Rav4 struck the man, police said, and then a second car also hit him. The driver of the second car stopped. But the first driver fled the scene, police said.
