20 Sexual Assault Cases Being Investigated in Palo Alto School District

A Bay Area school district has 20 open investigations into student-involved sexual assault or harassment cases.

The Mercury News reports all 20 cases were brought up this school year. A majority of the incidents in the Palo Alto Unified School District were logged in May following public scrutiny into the district's handing of student sexual violence.

In response, the district will create a new assistant superintendent position to oversee reports of sexual harassment as well as staff training. It will also launch a website with information on sex-and gender-based discrimination reporting, investigation and findings.

Palo Alto is home to Stanford University, where former swimmer Brock Turner attended when authorities say he sexually assaulted an unconscious woman outside an on-campus fraternity house in 2015.

A jury convicted Turner and he was sentenced to six months in jail.
