23-Year-Old Sonoma Woman Among 6 Killed in Arizona Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a plane crash in Scottsdale, Arizona, that killed 23-year-old Mariah Sunshine Coogan of Santa Rosa and five other people Monday.

Coogan was a former student at Cardinal Newman High School. Five other people perished in the crash on the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale golf course. Police identified them as James Louis Pedroza, 28, believed to be the pilot; Erik Valente, 26; Anand Anil Patel, 28; Helena Lagos, 22 and Iris Carolina Rodriguez Garcia, 23.

NTSB spokesman Terry Williams said the single-engine plane was placed in a secure location for a thorough examination.

A preliminary examination of the plane's wings, nose and tail was done at the scene, and a more thorough investigation will include reviewing video from cameras at Scottsdale Airport, interviewing witnesses and reviewing the plane's maintenance records, Williams said.

A preliminary report will be released within 10 days but it will not identify the cause of the crash, Williams said.

The plane reportedly was flying from Scottsdale to Las Vegas.

Video taken inside the plane shortly before it crashed has been posted on social media sites.
