4-Alarm Fire at Old Military Barracks on Mare Island Under Control

A four-alarm fire at old military barracks on Mare Island in Vallejo Sunday night is under control, a fire official said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Azuar Drive shortly after 7 p.m., fire Capt. Steve Smircich said.

The fire burned in abandoned military barracks near North Gate, fire officials said.

The barracks are known to house "homeless activity," Smircich said.

Fire Capt. Arthur Gonzales estimated the barracks have been vacant for about 15 years.

Fire crews said the two-story building was an old structure they used for fire department training.

The blaze was under control as of 9 p.m., Gonzales said. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews said they were forced to let the building burn to the ground because of the water shortage in the Bay Area.

Crews from the Fairfield Fire Department also assisted in battling the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
