49ers Honor Wounded Bay Area Veteran During National Anthem

The San Francisco 49ers took time out before Sunday's game to honor a Bay Area veteran.

National Guard Sgt. Alfredo Gutierrez is a lifelong 49ers fan.

He suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq.

Earlier this year, he wrote to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and sent his purple heart to the 49ers, thanking them.

Today, the 49ers thanked him and returned his purple heart.

And during today’s National Anthem, fans held up cards to spell out a special thanks to him and all American veterans.

The 49ers lost the game to the Carolina Panthers 10-9.
