Report: 49ers Renege on Promises to Build Youth Soccer Fields

Santa Clara soccer clubs furious at 49ers' "broken promises."

The 49ers forgot about the kids.

Soccer parents in Santa Clara are accusing the new kids on the block -- the San Francisco 49ers, whose new  $1.3 billion home at Levi's Stadium opens this year -- of steamrolling a youth soccer league, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

About one-fourth of the Youth Soccer League's games at Youth Soccer Park, a soccer field so nice it draws teams from Southern California, conflict with games at Levi's Stadium -- which is right next door, the newspaper reported.

The resulting traffic could render the youth fields ununsable, say parents, who present evidence in the form of letters from the 49ers that the team and owner Jed York promised to fund replacement fields, the newspaper reported.

The team "abandoned those plans," it told the youth soccer league, which will get new fields from the team only if they allow cars for "VIP stadium parking" to park on its "prized soccer park."

Fields originally eyed by the Niners are "no longer available," the newspaper reported.

As it is, the team plans to use the soccer park for parking "20 days" a year, the Mercury News reported.

Santa Clara may approve $2 million in spending for new fields, but soccer moms and dads maintain that a deal was a deal -- until it wasn't.
